Research Methods FAQ
Which method fits which question. For the underlying mechanics, see Synthetic Research and Panels.
Focus groups
What is an AI focus group?
An AI focus group is a simulated research panel where AI personas, trained on behavioral patterns and domain knowledge for specific audience segments, respond to questions, stimuli, and scenarios as a group. You present a concept, campaign, product, or message; the simulated participants react; you see where they agree, where they push back, and what questions they'd ask. The whole thing runs in minutes, not weeks.
See the full breakdown at /blog/ai-focus-group.
How does an AI focus group differ from a real focus group?
Real focus groups suffer from three well-documented problems:
- Groupthink. The most confident voice in the room shapes what everyone else says.
- Social desirability bias. Participants say what they think the moderator wants to hear.
- Tiny samples. Eight people is a social event, not a sample.
AI focus groups query 15 to 100 personas in parallel, capture every response independently (no peer pressure), and aggregate the distributions. Honesty improves because there is no social context to perform for.
When does a real focus group still beat an AI one?
When you need to observe live human behavior under social pressure (group dynamics research, sales pitch training, jury simulation), or when regulatory evidence requires real-human consent and audit trails.
What is a virtual focus group?
A focus group run remotely with real humans (Zoom-style). Distinct from an AI focus group, which uses synthetic personas. The marketing categories overlap; the underlying method is different.
Surveys and interviews
Can AI replace surveys?
Partially. AI panels replace surveys for exploratory, fast, multi-segment work where you want directional reads in days. They do not replace large-N surveys where statistical confidence intervals on real-human responses matter (e.g. regulated political polling, syndicated brand trackers). See AI surveys and AI vs real consumer research.
Can AI run customer interviews?
Yes. You can run depth interviews against an AI persona: probing questions, follow-ups, what-if scenarios. Useful for hypothesis generation, persona development, and pre-recruiting screening. Real interviews still win when you need novel observation (people doing things they could not articulate in advance). See AI customer interviews.
What about churn interviews?
AI churn interviews simulate departed customer personas to understand why they left. Faster than recruiting actual ex-customers (who often won't take the call) and useful for hypothesis generation about churn drivers. Validate against real churn cohort data. See AI churn prediction interviews.
Concept testing
What is AI concept testing?
AI concept testing validates ideas before you build them. Show a panel a product concept, feature description, naming option, or campaign idea. The panel reacts with what they like, what they push back on, what they don't understand, and whether they would buy or use it.
Faster, cheaper, and more iterative than fielding a survey or recruiting participants. Use it before committing to development. See AI concept testing.
Can AI test pricing?
Yes, with caveats. AI panels are good at price perception ("does $99/month feel reasonable for this?") and price reasoning ("why?"). They are weaker at predicting actual price elasticity in market, where revealed-preference data wins. Use for pre-launch directional reads, validate with A/B tests in market. See AI willingness to pay research.
Can AI test ad creative?
Yes. Show creative to a panel, ask for reactions, identify objections, score against alternatives. Particularly useful for high-volume creative where you need to triage which variants are worth running paid traffic against. See AI campaign effectiveness research and A/B testing Facebook LinkedIn ads against synthetic ICPs.
Can AI test naming?
Yes. Show name candidates to a panel, get reactions on associations, memorability, mispronunciation, category fit. Useful for shortlisting, less useful as the final arbiter. See AI for brand strategy research.
Tracking and journey
What is AI brand tracking?
AI brand tracking monitors brand health continuously through AI panels instead of expensive quarterly surveys. Run the same brand awareness, association, and perception questions against a stable panel every week or month. Catch movement faster than quarterly tracking, at a fraction of the cost. See AI brand tracker.
What is AI brand awareness research?
AI brand awareness research tests unaided and aided recall, brand associations, and category presence with synthetic audiences without fielding a survey. See AI brand awareness research.
What is AI customer journey mapping?
AI customer journey mapping uses synthetic personas to walk through every touchpoint of the buyer or user journey, surfacing emotional responses, friction, information gaps, and conversion blockers. Faster than traditional journey research, more dynamic than internal workshops. See AI customer journey mapping.
What is AI buyer journey simulation?
AI buyer journey simulation traces how your specific customer types move from first awareness to purchase decision, revealing friction and conversion blockers. See AI buyer journey simulation.
Segmentation and positioning
What is AI audience segmentation?
AI audience segmentation uses synthetic personas and panel data to identify distinct sub-groups in your target market, the language each one uses, what motivates them, and how they differ. Replaces or augments traditional segmentation studies that take 6 to 12 weeks to field. See AI audience segmentation.
What is AI competitive positioning research?
AI competitive positioning research surfaces how customers perceive you relative to competitors, using synthetic personas for fast, deep positioning reads. See AI competitive positioning and AI competitor analysis.
Can AI test positioning before launch?
Yes. Test brand narratives, message hierarchies, and positioning options against AI panels before committing to a campaign. See AI brand positioning.
Advanced
What is AI consumer behavior analysis?
Consumer behavior analysis with AI goes beyond tracking what customers do to understanding why, using synthetic personas that simulate real decision-making psychology. See AI consumer behavior analysis.
What is AI customer satisfaction research?
CSAT and NPS surveys tell you a number. AI customer satisfaction research tells you why that number exists and what would change it, in hours instead of weeks. See AI customer satisfaction research.
What is AI shopper insights research?
AI shopper insights research simulates pre-purchase decision moments at category, brand, and SKU level. Useful for FMCG, retail, and ecommerce work where shopper behavior diverges from stated preferences. See AI shopper insights.
